Todays trip ended up at Teggs Nose but it started out by going to the Cat and Fiddle to have a look at the climb up to the pub because it's one of the climbs in the Macc Monster which I won't be competing in but it did look interesting what with my first flush of success (as far as I'm concerned). Mind you there's a slight difference in the severity and amount of feet required this time, still you never know whether you can do something until you try. Anyway there seemed to be an event on up to the Cat and Fiddle but to be honest it didn't look like the day for it to me, it was wet and a little cold, not really the day for climbing up to the Cat and Fiddle dicing with cars on the way but then again I was in the safety of warm car. So to Teggs Nose. It's a country park with views across to Liverpool, Manchester, North Wales and Alderly Edge to name but a few. In this picture you can even see Jodrell Bank which is easier to see when you're there than on this picture but if you can see a white spot just down from the horizon and off right of the centre, the radio telescope was turning around whilst we were there making it easier to see but it was pretty unmistakable.

After tense negotiations with my daughter over how many pieces of bread she wanted for a sandwich broken down I hit the roof and the UN were called. Since the UN didn't think this was an issue of national importance they declined (how wrong they were) and I went back to slamming a ham sandwich together, yes slamming. Just a note for casual readers, there is no point in slamming a ham sandwich together, the most sound a slammed sandwich can make is a pathetic slapping sound which is no good for a tortured soul.
So with the conflict downgraded to guerilla war I plodded through to the lounge where I found that because of the sandwich crisis I had missed the start of one of if not the best spectacle in Formula 1... the Monaco Grand Prix. The only other contenders are Spa Francorchamps and Brazil, all for different reasons. Needless to say that this capped the day off to a tee.
So with the options of throttling members of my family (in a Homer vs Bart way) or going to Lyme Park I decided to choose the path that involves least criminal sentences.
So to the pic. This is one where at last the Orange San Francisco finally kicks out a cracking shot. It really does seem weird that smartphone cameras are pretty rubbish in general but get up close and get the light right and the pictures are pretty fantastic... well I think so, another example is a really close up picture of a baby frog which again was so close I was an inch or two off the frog, similarly here I was so close that I was in danger of darkening the picture with the shadow of the phone itself, luckily the day was so overcast that there was no danger of a shadow so I was probably able to get closer than on a sunny day... but then again on a sunny day there would be less chance of rain really. So bonus points for the San Francisco.

With nothing of interest, Zamyatin has been a barren place for the last few weeks and to be honest there has been nothing doing, so I though that I would rectify that by posting a picture. Taken on the same day as the last picture we went to the squirrel park known as Marie Louise Park. Named after the daughter of the patron who gave it to Manchester. However it appers that there are a whole load of squirrels that have taken it as their home. You might think that I am spinning you a yarn but no. I have never seen so many. If you're lucky at home then you might see one or two every so often but I suspect in this park then you'll see loads all of the time and bearing in mind that they don't hibernate then I suspect it's an all the year round thing.
Because of this you would expect a good picture but I am afraid I had two problems. The first is that they move far too quickly and I am far too bad at taking pictures. Add to this that the lens I chose wasn't an auto-focus, otherwise it would have been like shooting fish in a barrel. Anyway I'm not sure where the focus point is as I can't see it so perhaps it's camera shake that's the issue but here you go.

For those or you who wish to get really close to your feathered (well not really) friend without having to get in a hide and stay very still for ages then this is the bird for you. Proving that I know nothing about birds. This Falcon is in Bramhall Hall gardens just near the back (or is it the front) of the hall. An archive picture of course because I have been so busy, this is just a tester of the poor quality pictures I'll be able to tantalize you with when I have time.

After a bit of an unsuccessful day in many respects, here's another one of those chainsaw sculptures that seem to be popping up everywhere. This one isn't as good as the others, but the picture probably doesn't help because the camera had problems with the sun in the background.
The problem today started with the fact there are two Walton Halls and my GPS only knows about one of them and you can already guess whether it was the right one. So after travelling in the right direction for a while, I assumed that the strange diversion was just me not really knowing where Walton Hall was. As we approached Liverpool I realised that this was all going wrong. A quick check on the web got me the correct post code and so we were back retracing our steps back to just outside Warrington. Whilst it's a wee bit small and there's not a great deal there we did spend a bit walking around the gardens and then spent much longer watching my Daughter fail to play mini golf.

Blimey I should almost make this a feature of the site with this the third in the line of Chainsaw Wood carvings but then again perhaps they aren't made using chainsaws, it's only my assumption. So on this feature called “When Chainsaws Turn Good” -hmmm not that catchy, I'll never get a spot writing programmes for Channel Five- here's another carving.
This little gem is from Heaton Park. I'd have personally liked something more imaginative than a face but who am I to judge, I have never carved one of these things. It did take a few moments for me to find the thing after it was pointed out. It was a bit of “Oh look over there at that face carved in the tree”, so I started looking half way up a tree with leaves so of course I stupidly asked “What tree and where”. After a few minutes being told that “it was a tree and a face” someone actually pointed to the ground and it was obvious really.

With no time this weekend we were coming back from the bike shop with my broken bike (well not too broken) I remembered an owl that I wanted to take a picture of, so I had to hop out and take a picture. Of course just like the the Squirrel this too has been carved from a tree trunk.
It's less impressive but it's a better picture that makes is feel better and it even tells you that it's East Victoria Park as if Victoria Park is big enough to have an East, West, North and South.

I did try and take a picture of this memorial in Victoria Park two weeks ago but the TYTN II was rubbish. At this time of year and this time of day the sun is behind the memorial making it impossible to take anything but a silhouette of it, the Pentax however allows you to choose the where to take an exposure reading from an then shift the focus. I still reckon that a simple film camera would produce better results.
With my arms and as my Wife reports my face coated in bike oil this Saturday this is the best you're getting I am afraid. The house now smells of citrus degreaser and bike oil from putting the bike back together. There is the usual trail of black oil around the house which as you can imagine gets me no brownie points. With more work to go tomorrow setting the bike up for the morning commute on Monday I'm sure the doghouse is getting nearer.
Going back to the picture, the poppies at the bottom of the memorial are to do with a service that happened last weekend which is connected to the fact that the Air Cadets were in Manchester last weekend but I still don't know what that was for. Any ideas?

On a short trip to the park this time not as foggy as the last time and this time I had a full compliment of family with me not just me out testing my camera. In fact we were out trying to look for flowers for my daughter's homework. My wife pointed out the rainbow which initially I didn't believe because it hadn't rained (not that it needs to), then on further inspection there it was.
This picture is a little messed with. The contrast has just been upped which has darkened the trees to a silhouette and brought out the colours in the overcast sky.

Oh it's early and it's not so much of a good picture. Not the cameras fault of course, but being Christmas Day I don't really feel like going many places but I didn't think I might take a sneaky picture of this “White Christmas” with my new presents. First on trial was my hefty winter jacket which you cannot see, nor can you see my new jumper and in fact you can't see the final one, but you can see the results of the Pentax Optio 50 which this has been taken with. Naturally only time will tell whether the camera actually appears to be one of my faves or not. It's got a tough problem bearing in mind my QTEK is always in my pocket being my phone but the lack of pixels of the QTEK do let it down. We shall see.
