Wyre in the Blood
Wyre in the Blood (Pentax Optio 50)

Sorry I couldn't help myself with the pun but I had to use it because every time saw a council notice I kept on thinking of the ITV drama that I never watch, so because it never left my mind I just had to make you endure the bad pun. Of course you cannot go the Blackpool and not make a trip to Cleveleys to pay a visit to the Riverdance and add to my collection of broken ships as started with the Duke of Lancaster. This particular one is strange because it does seem to attract quite a few visiters and there's really nothing much to see. I can of course imagine billions of similar pictures on the web owing to the number of people taking pictures. This is a picture of the bottom of the stricken vessel from the other side of the cordon.

The Duke of Lancaster Too
The Duke of Lancaster Too (Pentax Optio 50)

This is the front view of the Duke of Lancaster. This time it appears to be trying to sail down a rather shallow river. It's concreted in so I think there's no fear of that, also they have dropped anchor for some reason, perhaps that just in case the rust holds and the concrete gives way.

The Duke of Lancaster
The Duke of Lancaster (Pentax Optio 50)

Slightly bored on Thursday I took a virtual flight along the coast from Llandudno towards home using Google Earth. Yes I was that bored. I decided that taking the coast would be more interesting than taking the usual A55. As I flew I checked the occasional links or interesting features, One of which was Mostyn's Port. Dragging slowly back down the coast I saw this funny mark that looked a little like a ship. Thinking that it would just be a ship at a port I zoomed in, after all they are aerial photos that capture cars and people, so I didn't expect it to be there until I found this link which caught my interest. After a bit more searching I found out that it was a boat that served up until the 70's when it was turned into Mostyn's Fun boat, a use that finished in the 80's. Needless to say that I had to see this for myself.

What's strange about the ship is that it eerily looks almost like it's waiting for people to board at a port and yet it's quite obvious that it's not moving at all from all the rust. Despite this from the car park it looks like a boat that is in a field and it's on it's way to you.

For more information and a quick map to where this place is then there is more information here but in short it is just about opposite of Park Gate where we went in October.

Bus Spotting
Bus Spotting (QTEK 9100)

The (from what I can only assume) badly advertised Manchester Museum of Transport is a bit of a strange thing. If you try to search for transport museum and Manchester then you get a few things. You get that it's a grade 2 listed building but you don't get the address.

How we found this is because my wife drove past a few signs for it and when she came back from work. We did our best to find the placeand after a bit of searching we found it and this is a picture from the place.

It's strange in that there are lots of things, but they are a little disorganised. It is attached to a working bus depot but the best part of it is when you find a bus that you may have travelled on. I also find it fantastic that radiators on old busses weren't covered and the radiator cap was out in the open, something that today's health and safety people would have a field day on let alone the trusting people wouldn't pour coke into it for sheer mischief.

Probably not worth the cash but something to go to and something that should still be here in another 100 years to tell people about the past of transport. Mind you I said it's not worth the cash but the displays are quite interesting and there are a few pics of Piccadilly which were pretty impressive. OK I'm wrong. Four quid per adult isn't bad. I think the problem was there was little time to do this with a 6 year old so it was a bit of a rush and also you have to be in the mind to do it.

The Train Terminates Here
The Train Terminates Here (QTEK 9100)

This picture (which is not clear) is of a viaduct, not a great picture I must admit. Whilst in Philips Park, we noticed this. Not knowing what it transported I had a look and it appears it transports nothing anymore, however it does seem to be home of trees (don't take my word for it I didn't actually confirm this, it just looks that way when you get right up to it). The viaduct stops at the road on the right just near the tree, cut off to make way for some building nearby. I can only assume that it would be for trains, but I thought it was interesting and that’s why there's a picture here.

Rollie Train Pic
Rollie Train Pic (Rollei 35b)

This is a very bad picture of the steam train that went through Denton a while back. This is the Rollei version, unfortunately when I scanned it, it clipped the top third off as the scanner didn't "see" any important detail in it. Of course the main problem with that is it’s unbalanced the picture and I haven’t had the time to fix this. Perhaps one day.

Das Boot
Das Boot (Sony Ericsson K700i)

This is a picture of the U-Boat on the Warship Museum in Birkenhead. Quite a small museum, but it's a good place to go if you have never even been on a warship, which sounds a stupid thing to say, because I suspect most people won't think of doing it. We didn't have a look at the U-Boat, the place was closing, but did get a chance to walk through a submarine HMS Onyx, and strange to think you could live in the cramped conditions for 90 days. I did try out a bed and being 6ft 1ins it wasn't my style, but strangely enough I didn't feel claustrophobic, but then again we weren't deep under the sea with goodness knows how many other people rushing about at battle stations. HMS Plymouth was interesting and being a boat had more room, but only a little more, but the U-Boat U534 (pictured) did evade us, so we shall have to go back and go for that tour next time.

Update 26/8/2006: I found out yesterday that the museum closed in February this year which it a great pity, I know the boats were scattered but the whereabouts of the U-Boat I don't know. If anyone does I would appreciate them emailing. I can't help thinking that the demise of the Museum was to do with the luxury apartments being build behind which is understandable, after all we definitely need more of them!

Update 25/3/2008: Found at last at Woodend Ferry Port

Fog Again
Fog Again (Sony Ericsson K700i)

This is what the poor train drivers and passengers drive out into from Manchester Piccadilly… deep dense fog. I never got out of second gear driving from A to B it was so thick.

Pea Souper
Pea Souper (Sony Ericsson K700i)

This is back at Manchester Piccadilly and from the other end of the platform despite the fact like it looks like a tube station... I think.

Freaky Fog
Freaky Fog (Sony Ericsson K700i)

This is sort of a bad pic, but only because you can't see what's going on too much. This is Manchester Piccadilly when you can't see the end of the platform. Not because it's dark but because there is fog in the station. Despite the strong lighting causing the k700i and the distance of the fog, you can just about see this abyss in the distance. It’s been like this all day.
