Piel Castle
Piel Castle (Pentax Optio 50)

On a very rainy Sunday it was time to do something. We set out not so early in an attempt to see a little bit or perhaps a lot of Piel Castle. As you can see from this picture, we didn't exactly see much of it. The weather was dreadful and several flooded roads and a car accident (not us) later we ended up at Roa Island which isn't an island at all, but the only bit you can get to close to Piel Island without getting the ferry. I suspect Roa Island might have been an island at one point as it's possible that the road to is was man made, but who knows.

Unfortunately we would have had to ring for the ferry (it was the wrong time of year surprisingly) which wasn't going to happen purely because we walked the bridge to the lifeboat station and the horizontal rain in that short walk was bad enough let alone a trip several times longer on some sort of boat yet to be seen. Somehow I got the feeling that this ferry would have been rowed and open, I don't know why I thought that because it's totally illogical, even so I had been put off.

So there you have it, here's Piel Island and Castle in the background as I stood on the beach being hammered by sideways rain and wind. One day, yes one day I shall visit Piel Castle and perhaps visit the comfort of its Pub.

Herne Bay
Herne Bay (TYTN II)

With the sun out again it was time to head out to the beach because it appears that I was in possetion of far too much white skin apparently red or brown is preferable. So as the title suggested we popped down to Herne Bay which is just down from Reculver, a place we visited on Sunday. It's a smallish seaside town filled with people who sound like Ray Winston (when he's playing the part of Londoner which is all the time). Nothing much to report other than it was one of the places (the only place if the blurb is to be belived) that the bouncing bomb was tested and a place with not just one pier but two.

In this picture you can see both... Honest. The new one is obvious and not have friends trying to save it. We didn't look round it but it doesn't look like mutch. The old one is the small dark thing on the horizon and the only part left of it which is the pier head and apparently used to ttake passengers to France by boat of course but by the looks of it by the time they got there they would have travelled most of the 20 odd miles. Abandon in th early 1800's because of lack of interest and a deterioration of the structure this is all that remains.

Green and Pleasant Beach
Green and Pleasant Beach (Minolta X500)

No this isn't a vision of Crosby beach if the humans had died out and the green green grass of home had encroached on the beach despite the fact that the opposite usually happens, no this is another scan mistake from the ION Negative scanner. Looks good though.

We went off to Crorby beach last month. This time it was the wrong time. The day before it was nice and sunny with reports of the next day being awful, and low as the weathermen said it happened. Yes they were right for once. Then when we were cold and ready to go back to the car, my daughter fell over... well I though she fell over. It looked like she was on her knees until it was pointed out to me her legs were not bent. So a rescue mission was started to extricate her from the mud. Once she was free the next mission was to free the wellies.

Pier Eye for the Straight Guy
Pier Eye for the Straight Guy (Pentax Optio 50)

What with the two pier fires in England this year with Brighton Pier and Fleetwood Pier going up in flames, lets hope that this isn't the last picture of Llandudno's Pier you see, however I think not (I know nothing of Brighton's Pier) but Fleetwood's Pier have been abandoned for years and had confirmed a controversial plan to put apartments on it which was disliked by some. At least Llandudno's Pier is well loved, used and still open. The Pier looks to be booming to such an extent that they have raised the rates so businesses such as a local photographer are moving out. Should the worst happen to the Pier before that I would at least like to live to have a pint at the bar at the end of the Pier. Up until now I have yet to be able to have a pint there for one reason or another. I have a picture of Fleetwood Pier but this will have to be scanned in and is more of a depressive closed down Pier shot.

This is of course the Pier with the Grand Hotel in the foreground. You're lucky there were any pictures at all after this weekend's jaunt to the Welsh Riviera. We went to The Greenwood Forest Park where there is an exhibition with a sandstorm machine. I put the camera on top of the machine to try it out... oh yes a sandstorm and it's a little fun and then looked for my camera. Hold on the camera isn't on the top of the machine. With a little thought I started wondering if I imagined putting the camera on top so I patted myself down to check my pockets... no camera. A further look on top of the machine led to the discovery that there was no top of the machine, I had actually dropped my camera into the sandstorm machine. A bit of climbing and looking found the camera wedged next to the blower. Phew.

Other discoveries this weekend (other than the sandstorm machine has no top) were that the GPS on my phone contains a map of England, yes only England if you type in a postcode in Wales you're off the map... I should have brought my real GPS. Also we found out this weekend that Proton Satria's are not slim cars but they can park on a very steep slope at the ski slope even if it does take you several circles of the back roads to find the right one (because the GPS doesn't have it on the map). All in all good weather prevailed and short sleeves were in order for some of it along with sandy little feet.

St. Annes Pier
St. Annes Pier (Pentax Optio 50)

After an outing on The One Show we or perhaps it was I decided to go to St. Annes to see the Pier. I suspect it was only me that wanted to see it because we were only there for a matter of minutes before we were gone. It was spurred because as mentioned that on The One Show they were talking about the fate of the Fleetwood Pier that I do have a picture of but is not on Zamyatin.

It's strange that such a small pier in St. Annes can survive whilst being so poor and yet in Fleetwood they are struggling. I hope for St. Annes in the summer months you can go out on deck which you couldn't go on the day we went so as far as I am concerned the pier is only a glorified arcade with what looks like a house as an entrance which is the only interesting bit about it.

I suspect part of the problem is that Fleetwood isn't your usual first thought to go for a holiday (mind you neither is St. Annes but St. Annes may appear in the list over Fleetwood). Apparently they are thinking about putting flats on the pier at Fleetwood and I if they do that then it's a shame but as one guy said on The One Show if the public can still use the pier then so be it. Obviously I'd like the pier to have the same life like Llandudno's pier but if that's not the case then if public access and apartments are the way then that's better than getting rid. However I wonder whether the public will get access.

Staring at the Sea
Staring at the Sea (Nisis DV5)

Busy again so more archive pictures I am afraid. Yes I am a dead loss at this weekly photoblog thing. Thank goodness I haven't decided to write a blog with one entry per day. That would be awful.

This is a picture of Crosby Beach again. Whatever you think about Anthony Gormley this is a fantastic thing to see. You may have guessed this by the fact that there are so many pictures on this photoblog, so am glad they are still there despite there was a risk last year that they would be moved. I believe Sefton Council paid to keep the statues there which I think is a good thing.

Cadiz Town
Cadiz Town (QTEK 9100)

For those who think that Cadiz Town is a football club then here's the truth. This is a picture of the sprawl of Cadiz along the coast. The mad reach of Cadiz is a little daunting. You drive for ages after crossing the bridge through the town to get to the Cathedral. This is from the path to San Sebastian. It's a weird place and whilst I was there I never looked at a map, I have a GPS (my Wife) and only now do I realise that Cadiz is some sort of strange peninsularish thing. If you do click on the link, please zoom into San Sebastian, it's a fort. Now I have come home it's become more interesting. I just wish I knew that when I was there, instead I was tired of driving from Seville. There is a lesson there but I know that I will never learn it

Cadiz from the Beach
Cadiz from the Beach (QTEK 9100)

Well not actually from the beach it's from a pier like thing that joins to a fort on the beach. I still maintain the beach thing because I could have easily thrown myself over the side of the pier and hit dry(ish) land. The fort was closed which was a way off. We got half way only to see the closed gates at which point I took this and we turned back.

Skegness Beach
Skegness Beach (Minolta X500)

On a trip to Lincoln we had a day out to Skegness. Just like the usual British seaside town, there are the usual small scale rides all closed down since it's winter with the usual selection of shops selling gifts and fast food. This picture is less about a closed seaside town and more about the beach as you can see. Perhaps the focus could have gone further out, but the problem might have been that I'd have got too much background in. None the less here's an archive picture, one that I'd almost forgotten about and still rather like. That's not so say that they won't be any chance of pics tomorrow only that due to the lovely weather and my lack of inventiveness, I doubt any pictures happening tomorrow.

Crosby Beach Again
Crosby Beach Again (Nisis DV5)

This time we made and actual attempt to go to Crosby beach this time and during the day this time too. In a break from the bad weather this was a wind-lashed Crosby beach and a very bright beach too, so much so that I'd turned the brightness of the camera down to the minimum and all but one of the pictures were over exposed. We walked the full three kilometres of the beach and at one point nearly getting stuck in some sandy mud that initially scarily enough seemed like quicksand. Got out alive and counted down the tagged statues. The only problem of walking all that way was that the car was now three kilometres away.
