Pier's Pictures

White Rock
White Rock (Orange San Francisco)

It's white and it's got rocks in it. On a rather overcast and blowy day we descended on White Rock, not sure why it's called White Rock but it does have a huge white rock near it which might explain the name. It has a pier and contaminated water so the lone surfer or body boarder I think they were might have been risking their health but hey, there were TV cameras out for him so it was probably worth it.

Apart from the huge white rock there was very little else if interest, a few shops, ice-cream and restaurants but that's it. So after a brief walk it was off to crescent beach for more overcastness and a sit whilst the kids got soaking and sandy. Still the weather perked up and was really hot just as we were about to leave a good thing too after yesterday's baking.

Anyway the pic is of the start of the pier at White Rock if you couldn't have guessed. I'm surprised it came out so well, I thought that it would have been completely underexposed owing to the bright sky (relatively) combined with the poor camera on the San Fran

Herne Bay
Herne Bay (TYTN II)

With the sun out again it was time to head out to the beach because it appears that I was in possetion of far too much white skin apparently red or brown is preferable. So as the title suggested we popped down to Herne Bay which is just down from Reculver, a place we visited on Sunday. It's a smallish seaside town filled with people who sound like Ray Winston (when he's playing the part of Londoner which is all the time). Nothing much to report other than it was one of the places (the only place if the blurb is to be belived) that the bouncing bomb was tested and a place with not just one pier but two.

In this picture you can see both... Honest. The new one is obvious and not have friends trying to save it. We didn't look round it but it doesn't look like mutch. The old one is the small dark thing on the horizon and the only part left of it which is the pier head and apparently used to ttake passengers to France by boat of course but by the looks of it by the time they got there they would have travelled most of the 20 odd miles. Abandon in th early 1800's because of lack of interest and a deterioration of the structure this is all that remains.

Pier Eye for the Straight Guy
Pier Eye for the Straight Guy (Pentax Optio 50)

What with the two pier fires in England this year with Brighton Pier and Fleetwood Pier going up in flames, lets hope that this isn't the last picture of Llandudno's Pier you see, however I think not (I know nothing of Brighton's Pier) but Fleetwood's Pier have been abandoned for years and had confirmed a controversial plan to put apartments on it which was disliked by some. At least Llandudno's Pier is well loved, used and still open. The Pier looks to be booming to such an extent that they have raised the rates so businesses such as a local photographer are moving out. Should the worst happen to the Pier before that I would at least like to live to have a pint at the bar at the end of the Pier. Up until now I have yet to be able to have a pint there for one reason or another. I have a picture of Fleetwood Pier but this will have to be scanned in and is more of a depressive closed down Pier shot.

This is of course the Pier with the Grand Hotel in the foreground. You're lucky there were any pictures at all after this weekend's jaunt to the Welsh Riviera. We went to The Greenwood Forest Park where there is an exhibition with a sandstorm machine. I put the camera on top of the machine to try it out... oh yes a sandstorm and it's a little fun and then looked for my camera. Hold on the camera isn't on the top of the machine. With a little thought I started wondering if I imagined putting the camera on top so I patted myself down to check my pockets... no camera. A further look on top of the machine led to the discovery that there was no top of the machine, I had actually dropped my camera into the sandstorm machine. A bit of climbing and looking found the camera wedged next to the blower. Phew.

Other discoveries this weekend (other than the sandstorm machine has no top) were that the GPS on my phone contains a map of England, yes only England if you type in a postcode in Wales you're off the map... I should have brought my real GPS. Also we found out this weekend that Proton Satria's are not slim cars but they can park on a very steep slope at the ski slope even if it does take you several circles of the back roads to find the right one (because the GPS doesn't have it on the map). All in all good weather prevailed and short sleeves were in order for some of it along with sandy little feet.

St. Annes Pier
St. Annes Pier (Pentax Optio 50)

After an outing on The One Show we or perhaps it was I decided to go to St. Annes to see the Pier. I suspect it was only me that wanted to see it because we were only there for a matter of minutes before we were gone. It was spurred because as mentioned that on The One Show they were talking about the fate of the Fleetwood Pier that I do have a picture of but is not on Zamyatin.

It's strange that such a small pier in St. Annes can survive whilst being so poor and yet in Fleetwood they are struggling. I hope for St. Annes in the summer months you can go out on deck which you couldn't go on the day we went so as far as I am concerned the pier is only a glorified arcade with what looks like a house as an entrance which is the only interesting bit about it.

I suspect part of the problem is that Fleetwood isn't your usual first thought to go for a holiday (mind you neither is St. Annes but St. Annes may appear in the list over Fleetwood). Apparently they are thinking about putting flats on the pier at Fleetwood and I if they do that then it's a shame but as one guy said on The One Show if the public can still use the pier then so be it. Obviously I'd like the pier to have the same life like Llandudno's pier but if that's not the case then if public access and apartments are the way then that's better than getting rid. However I wonder whether the public will get access.

Southport Pier
Southport Pier (QTEK 9100)

Today's outing was to Southport. Like so many seaside towns they do seem a little sad in the winter and with the car park we stopped at being right next to the closed Pleasureland that didn't help the gloomy feel you get from some seaside towns. Of course when you trip around the rest of Southport it doesn't seem to have done it harm (Pleasureland's closure I mean) but then again it seems slightly more wealthy than Fleetwood or Morecambe for that matter which probably helps.

This picture is from the end of the Pier where a rather useless tram runs from to the start of the town and back. The building on the left is the café on the end of the pier. But it all seems an ultra-modern affair for a pier when you compare this to Llandudno or Blackpool.

Year of the Pier
Year of the Pier (Nisis DV5)

I never knew that 1996 was the year of the Pier but now I do. I don't think I have ever noticed this before, but then again I probably have. I have walked past it and probably trodden on it enough times, so this time I took a picture to prove that I know. However, despite pointing my picture down at the ground, some people didn't think to avoid the shot so I had to wait. This was a bit like when I was taking a time exposure of York Cathedral’s ceiling (I think) and because someone didn't see the camera I nearly got a shot of the inside of someone's dress to much amazement of some French tourists.

Llandudno Pier
Llandudno Pier (Nisis DV5)

A picture of Llandudno Pier last weekend. The sun was out the arcade was full of... OK games and the promanade was good. After a relaxing day there was nothing better than watching my brother and his wife trying to fold a popup tend back into the bag.
