When I was a kid, the face that showed up on the telly when the Amazing Kreskin came on, scared the heck out of me, and it wasn't that scary. I shall have to find in into to see how I fare now. But to be honest this face from Burghley House's sculpture garden isn't exactly a nice one, and they have two. Whilst I have heard of the uncanny valley, this isn't even close to that, it's just sort of ot nice.
Despite this, they do have a few other installations that are interesting like the Pac Man one that I stumbled upon, I personally liked it because it was fun and just something out of ordinary... not that a 10ft face mask isn't. Still the house is nice to visit and the gardens are pretty impressive what with the surprising part, which is a little bit of a Italianesque formal garden with something a bit different. If you're in the area it's definitely worth the trip.

We travelled to see this sculpture last year, only to find that it wasn't finished. So we had a few hours to kill whilst our daughter was in rehearsals for a play. Luckily the sculpture is just outside in St Helens where the Sutton Manor Colliery used to be, the site apparently on a slag heap. Of course looking out onto the M62 it's obviously vying for a place in art history along side the Angel of the North. Personally I prefer the Angel of the North, this -whilst impressive- is just a white elongated head. Despite this there were plenty of visitors to the site, so it's not doing too bad for itself.
Needless to day the picture was taken looking up at the sculpture making it look very deformed. I was trying to get the head less elongated but by accident got the chin far too big to look normal.
What would have bee nice if there was more time would have been to look out for remnants of the pit which was supposed to be the largest in Lancashire, but it was back on the road to get Tea and pick up our daughter.

Blimey I should almost make this a feature of the site with this the third in the line of Chainsaw Wood carvings but then again perhaps they aren't made using chainsaws, it's only my assumption. So on this feature called “When Chainsaws Turn Good” -hmmm not that catchy, I'll never get a spot writing programmes for Channel Five- here's another carving.
This little gem is from Heaton Park. I'd have personally liked something more imaginative than a face but who am I to judge, I have never carved one of these things. It did take a few moments for me to find the thing after it was pointed out. It was a bit of “Oh look over there at that face carved in the tree”, so I started looking half way up a tree with leaves so of course I stupidly asked “What tree and where”. After a few minutes being told that “it was a tree and a face” someone actually pointed to the ground and it was obvious really.

I woke up this morning with this greeting me as I pulled back the curtains in my daughters bedroom. Half wondering whether to get annoyed about dirty fingers on the window I stopped and took a picture. I'm sure we have bigger things to deal with in our house than dirty finger on windows such as no decent covering on the bathroom ceiling for a start, or a back bedroom still with wood-chip wallpaper, to name just two.
