I thought that Saturday nights could get no worse. Of course there's Dr. Who which is always a class act now thought it went through it's period of wobbles until (I think) the irresistible combo of RTD and David Tennant got on our screens, sure Christopher Eccleston started the roll of this but I can't help thinking that David Tennant made the whole thing complete. But this isn't about Dr. Who since Dr. Who is finished.

We have had “Dancing on Ice”, “Strictly Come Dancing Ballroom Celebrity Edition”, and “Ant and Dec”. So what in it's infinite wisdom will the BBC deploy in the void left by Dr. Who?

Last Choir Standing. Wow what a delight of Choir fun with the uber-exposed Myleene Klass. How I now regret my love for Dr. Who. If only Last Choir Standing happened in my youth then Tom Baker would never have been a hero of mine.

Sorry to say this but I'm starting to wish that ITV would retaliate with Blind Date.

I'm sure it's a well trodden path now after the UEFA Rangers match but I didn't think (before the riots) that it was a fantastic idea to show the match on big screens in Manchester. I must admit I never knew that the match was going on until the signs went out on Monday all over Albert Square about it's closure. I suspect from some of the comments most of the residents of Manchester didn't know about it either, which is a strange decision if you believe that Manchester City City council has been trying to entice people to come into Manchester not just to work and play but to live.

The reason why I thought it was a strange decision is because the last time a big screen was used to show a match... hold on can you guess. Yes there was a mini riot, very 10 out of 10 go to the top of the class. From memory I believe it was for the World Cup and the rest of the matches were not shown. So wind forward to now and Manchester Council think that importing over one hundred thousand Rangers fans to show a UEFA match is a good idea.

I was in Manchester on the day up until five o'clock and all seemed well. Before then though I could have guessed things were not going to be too healthy when I cycled into work on the morning of the match and stopped at a set of traffic lights just before nine o'clock. Two Rangers were sat on a wall dropped a bottle over a wall and stumbled off but then again that's just isolated and that could have happened if nothing had kicked off I suppose. Of course the line of nose to tail riot vans filling Jackson's Row didn't give me a good feeling when I went to lunch but hey that's just a precaution I thought then.

What's strange is that the parade after the EUFA final for Manchester United has been called off. Unless I'm completely wrong I don't believe that we have had many problems with parades in Manchester but we have had problems with screening matches. I understand the nervousness with the parade but surely the parade has been harmed by a stupid decision to screen the Rangers match but surely this is just knee-jerk which basically tells me that Manchester Council have no idea and it's all about being seen to do something rather than actually doing something.

I read the news on the BBC website today to find that a strike has caused an oil refinery to shut down. From the site I believe that it's responsible for a third of the oil that comes in to the country, I started getting worried. Luckily Number 10 has put out a plea to tell people not to panic buy.

That should sort it.

This one of those blog posts that says this it isn't going to talk about one thing or another because something else is the thing the blog about despite making snide comments about one thing or another that the blog wasn't about.... So let's go.

I wasn't going to talk about Matthew Parris with his comment in the times about him thinking that “stringing piano wire across rural roads” [sic] was a joke. I read the article and agree to some extent but I think he must have still been drunk from his Christmas excess on the 27th of December because it did look a little like an attack and one that should stay in his head rather than being poured out into a column. However I didn't want to write about him purely because his opinions don't really and have never bothered me because he's someone I don't care about too much but this text seems to show him as someone who reads the Politically Correct Manual without realising that most of the reason that the manual has been written is because there are some people who don't have any respect for anyone else. Normal people don't the need the manual basically because they realise a stupid thought before it leaves their brain to the mouth (or pen or laptop in this case). I am of course not blogging about it because it's all been said in his Wikipedia article. So I'm not blogging about it.

I was going to talk about J.D. Wetherspoons decision on parties of people with at least one child in the party. The official line is that adults in the party are only allowed two drinks. There's been a bit f conflicting information as to why this and what the official line is. Is it new legislation and is it two drinks or just alcoholic drinks. The word from Wetherspoons is on the last BBC report was that parents could have a drink with the mean and one after but after that there was no need for them to be in the pub. I personally challenge this. If I drink really fast I reckon I could have four so long as I stack them up prior to the meal and then have two after making six. I would have to stack them up purely due to the length of the bar queue this would significantly reduce drinking time. Luckily I don't have the problem of meals in pubs with my family and if I were to go to a pub I would never choose a Wetherspoons purely because I hate them because usually the family area is in the most uncomfortable part of the pub. Makes you wonder why they even offer a family section at all. Mind you it's a good job I'm not blogging about that either!

So on to the main event. There was an unfortunate incident over the sudden death of Mark Speight's fiancee Natasha Collins. Now I am not making fun of the incident however I think the picture you see in Google isn't so much appropriate. At this point where I took the screen grab it's not so bad:

However the previous picture had him on his own with his rubbery smiley face with two thumbs up.

Nice.

My Wife got a letter today. It said that her details and our Daughters details were lost on the CDs that the Inland Revenue service lost recently. Apparently it contained their names, dates of birth, national insurance number and bank details for paying into accounts for child benefit.

Now personally I think this does sort of sound the death nell for the ID card as Obscurer says however I suspect a few months down the line the “Good British Public” will have this all forgotten so long as this issue doesn't carry on. The reason I say this is because the “Good British Public” were horrified about mobile phones killing them (yet were happy to use them anyway) during which they quite happily installed wireless routers. Only years later did someone think... “hold on if we don't like mobiles then perhaps wireless is a problem too“. The “Good British Public” have a short term memory.

Back onto the CDs/ The advice of banks (says the letter) is that you do not need to change you account number and that as far as I know from banks is correct. Why? Because banks can't be arsed doing it. I had people drawing from my account at one point and I asked to change my account number. I got my money back but they were very reluctant to change anything other than deny the payment.

I must admit I have not been following this too much but all I have heard is conflicting. I have heard that there were two CDs missing, sometimes I hear that there are more. Some reports say that the company didn't want a CD... it goes on. It all looks a little like a situation where the problem is larger than we are being told.

My only problem with the whole of this is why was the information put on a CD. I know on some tech forums they wonder why it was not encrypted. My question is why is wasn't transferred electronically. If it were done that way we would end up winning two ways. The first is that in this way people would have encrypted it and the second is that it would have been better for carbon emissions, no vans to drive the CDs and it would have taken a matter of minutes to transfer. The addition to this is that you would know when they got it, no waiting for them to ask you when you are going to send it again.

However I do sort of understand, it's a usual thing that happens when people think they know what they are doing. It's a unknown unknown where someone doesn't actually know what they are doing but they think they do. For this reason I think the format of the files on the CD will be in Excel.
